Could be Good News for the Private Landlord

A report by the Joesph Rowntree Foundation believs a whole generation may be locked out of owning a home.  The report says that just one in four couples will be able to afford to buy a home in the future.

The report urges an increase in both public and private housing and a need to reduce the boom and bust housing cycle; especially relevant when one major mortgage provider believes over 13% of their mortgages are in negative equaity.

They say that housebuilding is essential; If UK house building remains at the current level of 150,000 units a year, the proportion of couples aged 30-34 who are able to afford their first home will fall from 56% to just 28% by 2026.

University of Glasgow Professor in Urban Economics (The report's author) warned that home ownership will "increasingly entrench the economic privilege of the children of the better off … for those locked out, the property owning democracy must increasingly represent a rotten borough".
