Glossary - HMO / Houses of Multiple Occupancy
A HMO or houses of multiple occupancy is a let property where the tenancy consists of a number of individual agreements. This type of rental agreement is popular in student communities, immigration communities and young professionals where multiple tenants share one property.
HMO property is often referred to as having more than six individuals.
HMOs have presented issues to some local authorities who receive complaints from other residents of excessive noise and litter from tenants. Some areas of major student cities such as Leeds and Manchester have high densities of HMO property.
